The government of Ireland held referendums on 22 May 2015 on two proposed amendments to the Constitution of Ireland. The amendments, which were among those recommended by the Constitutional Convention, would reduce the age of candidacy for the President of Ireland from 35 to 21, and permit same-sex marriage.
Same-sex couples will soon be able to walk down the aisle in the Emerald Isle. It's crazy to think, only 22 years have passed since Ireland decriminalized homosexuality. Today, we are more truly a nation of equals. The people of Ireland have said an emphatic YES to Equality. We now join twenty other countries where same-sex-marriage has been made possible. We are the first country in the world to do so by vote of the people.
I personally felt very strong about this referendum. For the past few weeks I have posted vote yes for me. Unfortunately in this day and age, unless you are in the U.S.A or back at home you can not vote. Luckily so many young voters having emigrated within the last 18 months, were eligible and returned home to vote.
The measure will sail through with more than 60% of voters approving, according to official results.
More than 1.8 million Irish voters participated in the election, about 60% percent of the total electorate in our majority Catholic nation.
We will now add to our Constitution these seventeen words: ‘Marriage may be contracted in accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their sex.' With these words, we make it possible for our gay citizens to marry the person they love. As our former President, Uachtaran Mary McAleese said last week, our gay children will now be able to know the joy and peace and comfort of being part of a loving married couple recognized at the highest level our country can offer.
The Irish people have shown their compassion. They have shown profound and touching generosity, humanity, and wisdom. We have made a historic change. One simple word, YES, for a minority, that word means everything.
Tonight I can sign off a very haapy lady.
